Doula comes from the Greek language, and means ‘woman who serves’. Today a doula refers to a woman who provides emotional and physical support to pregnant women and couples throughout pregnancy, labour and postpartum. Since the beginning of time women have been supported by other women during labour, and it was not until childbirth moved into the hospital that pregnant women labored alone or with their partner. The term doula has become more popular over the past few years as expectant parents, and the healthcare system are becoming more knowledgeable of the statistically proven benefits of having doula support.
